1B: HAMLET, MACBETH & PBS ONLINE, BART SIMPSON

David Tennant as Hamlet on PBS
A Noise Within, the classical repertory theatre based in Pasadena, offers a study guide to Hamlet.

Patrick Stewart as Claudius, left, and David Tennant as Hamlet.

Annie Tang, former PCC student, now at UCLA, and former attendee of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival told us about some great Shakespeare productions online at PBS. See Hamlet and, not to be missed, Macbeth, both shown on PBS and streaming online.  David "Dr. Who" Tennant has the lead in Hamlet; Patrick "Star Trek" Stewart appears as Claudius in Hamlet and in the title role of Macbeth.

A big thank you to Albert Carranza for finding this link of Bart Simpson as Hamlet. Hamlet, above, kills Polonius, at left.

    - Why does Claudius really try to send Hamlet with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to England? - Was this deed supposed to be a secret kept from queen Gertrude?
Hamlet explanation- I believe that Hamlet does truly love Ophelia and tries to convey some of his feelings for her in this scene. But that through the discourse of his acting he realizes that vengeance is going to cost him his life. So the only way Hamlet sees he can protect Ophelia from realizing his mad scheme is to shun her love and tell her, "Get thee to a nunn'ry." This would keep here away from the corrupted atmosphere of the palace. (Page 828-830: Act III, Scene 1, Lines 57-137)
Hamlet explanation/clarification- I believe that Hamlet loved Ophelia very much and although he acted as though he was "mad," he was still in his right mind to try and protect her from the horrors that was happening in the court. He told her to go to a "nunnery" so that she would be ignorant of Hamlet's revenge plot against Claudius and so that she herself would not tell Polonius his plan and the real reason of why he was pretending to act crazy. To protect Ophelia and to save her from future harm, Hamlet acted cruel against her so she would pull away from him and go away from court. (Page 830: Act 3, Scene 1, lines 112-115 & 120-127)
